Volunteer & Internship Opportunities

The mission of the Utah Health Policy Project is to create quality, affordable, comprehensive health care coverage for all Utahns through research, policy innovation, education, and civic engagement. Given that we are a young 501-C-3 nonprofit organization, volunteers are critical to our mission. The UHPP is committed to creating and supporting mutually rewarding volunteer projects and internships.

What we expect of our volunteers...

  • A commitment of 4 hours/week or more (8-10 hours preferred), over a minimium 2 month period.
  • Only commit to a number of hours/week you can sustain.
  • Establish a regular schedule and stay with it (this way we will have enough space and a computer available for scheduled volunteers).
  • Be friendly, respectful, and professional when representing the UHPP in writing or in conversation

What volunteers can expect of the UHPP...

  • A project description with clear instructions.
  • We will be on hand to answer questions about the project.
  • You will have all the tools you need to complete the project (computer, internet, comfortable space to work).
  • A letter of recommendation or a job reference, if requested, with successful completion of a minimum 2 month (minimum 4 hours/week) volunteer assignment.
  • When we have a job opening, qualified volunteers will be warmly encouraged to apply.
  • Matching of volunteer / internship tasks to your interests as much as possible.

Volunteer/Internship Projects 2009-2010
The UHPP needs volunteers and/or interns to work on the following projects:

1. Data Entry, Database & Relationship Maintenance
Many individuals have signed up to get more information about the UHPP. As our audience continues to grow, we need the individuals added to our database and flagged in ways to keep them connected to our work.

2. Fundraising-Related Research and Prospect List Management
Work with lists of donors to: identify prospects, assist in grant seeking projects, participate in creating / organizing UHPP donor events.

3. Storybanking
Get personal with the problem! Interview uninsured, under-insured individuals and Medicaid enrollees about their experience (or lack thereof) with Utah's health care delivery and financing systems. Write up the interview in the form of a story with digital photos for publishing on our website and/or potential media coverage.

4. Research on Specific Topics Related to our Mission
Develop or continue research on any of our four initiatives (as listed on our website). Due to the specialized nature of our research projects, we would prefer for volunteers to start working in one of the above areas. Once volunteers/interns are more familiar with our work, we can discuss a specific research project.
